I'm a bass music DJ from Chicago thats experimenting with this idea I came up with a year and some ago of speeding up dubstep songs to DnB tempo. I'm not a fan of a lot of the Drumstep out there but i like the tempo. So I dig for the right Dubstep songs that fit my needs Sped up, and i edit/remix them to various degrees depending on the mood. The first track Me and my friend made like this was a re-edit of a mashup i made called "What They Want Is Filth!" By my homie DJ SOLO http://soundcloud.com/dj-kabz/what-they-want-is-filth-solo-rmx And myeslf and him have been building on the idea from there...
How long have you been mixing?: since 1993
What first got you into music and mixing?: I was a raver who hung out with all the legendary rave DJ's from Chicago in the early 1990's
What equipment do you use?: 2 Technics 1200 MK2's, Serato SL1, Apple MacBook Pro, and a M-Audio Axiom25 MIDI Controller.
What is the significance of your DJ name, How did you get that name?: KB are my initials, and A to Z... KAB-ONE was my Graff Witing name back in the day as well.
Who or what are your influences in music?: Anything and everything that's good, but I tend to stay away from any "POP Music" But I guess the progression went New Wave => Industrial => New Beat => Rave Music => Hip Hop => Trip Hop => Dnb => Dubstep... Thats the chai of events going back to the 80's lol
What do you listen for in a beat?: It depends on the genre or song... Generally and interesting melody, a good snare/kick, a lack of cheesy vocals, a beat that has some teeth to it. I like a track to have some low end to it.
What was the last vinyl / CD you bought?: Ihonestly cannot remember... I think i bought the Art of Noise "Paranomia" 12" a couple years ago xD
What is your favorite vinyl / CD of the month?: I like the Eptic EP on Chronos Records atm
Do you produce your own music?: Yes. I am starting to dive into original production, but I have made a little name for myself making Mash-Ups and Re-Edits. or remix work.
What software / equipment do you use to produce your music?: Lately I have been using Ableton Live 8.2 I think... But i know Reason, Logic, Recycle, just software in general...
Do you host any regular events?: I have a monthly residency here in Chicago called Betabass, backed by Betamorph Recordings, and Rage Face Records.
What other DJ or producer do you rate at the moment if any?: I don't understand this question... But Figure is a beast that can actually DJ as well! 6BLOCC is also a true DJ that has put out a consistent body of relevant music since dubstep came stateside.
What plans do you have in the future for yourself?: I plan to take over the WORLD, are you kidding?! lol I just hope to get my music out to as many people as possible and hope that some of them want me to come and party in their town. I just love playing music for people, travelling, and meeting new people... Sharing music flows in my blood, and I feel some big things are on the cusp of breaking.
There's a lot of weird politics that go with certain genres of music, people saying if its this, then it has got to sound a certain way... I strongly disagree with that. My opinion is that if it sounds good, has some filthy bass innit and makes you dance/feel something, then sit back and enjoy it, take what you want from it and possibly take it and push it even further.
